Source description

Support: Upper righthand corner of a large-grained white marble panel, chipped along all edges (w: 0.014 × h: 0.10 × d: 0.06).

Layout: Inscribed on the heavily encrusted face.

Letters: ca. 0.015.

Date: Perhaps late second or early first century BC (lettering).

Findspot: Found in 1974 during the American excavations at Cyrene: Enclosed sanctuary of Demeter and Kore, in the surface fill of the fifth terrace.

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Cyrene Museum, Storeroom of the American excavations, 74-1110. Seen by J. Reynolds at Shahat: in the Storeroom of the American excavations. Not seen by IGCyr team.

Commentary

The personal name at the genitive case at l. 1 seems to be the father's name, probably of the donor.

At line 2, the preserved letters are probably, as suggested by J.M. Reynolds, part of the title 'bodyguard', for which either σωματοφύλαξ or the upper rank ἀρχισωματοφύλαξ would be possible (the latter already attested at IGCyr0155002). If so, the inscription might mention honours for a Lagid officer or emanating from him. Anyhow it would reinforce the feeling that the inscription dates before the end of the Hellenistic monarchy in Cyrenaica.
