Source description

Support: Fragment of a light brown-glazed ware vase (dimensions unknown).

Layout: Scratched on the surface; no other precision given.

Letters: Height unknown; regularly cut phi with large loop.

Date: Perhaps sixth century BC

Findspot: Found by S. Stucchi in 1958 at Cyrene: agora, in a sounding under the future Augusteum.

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Cyrene Museum, Storeroom of the Italian missions, A58 A6. Studied by L. Gasperini in the years 1960 at Shahat Not seen by IGCyr team.

Commentary

Gasperini's indication about the direction of writing are somewhat confusing. Both readings proposed by him should be read from left to right. Moreover there seems no need to admit a delta with the shape of a Latin D for the second character.

All suggested readings being meaningless, neither seems compulsory, but for the fact that no Greek word would admit a group ΦΔ.
