Source description

Support: White marble rectangular base without any moulding; a circular hollow on top (w: 0.625 × h: 0.24 × d: 0.485).

Layout: Inscribed on the face.

Letters: 0.035; careful lettering, without serifs.

Date: Ca. 300 BC (lettering).

Findspot: Found before 1935 at Cyrene: East Necropolis, by the Italian army, while digging for a shaft near Wadi Sneidi, i.e. in the North-Eastern part of the Necropolis.

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Cyrene Museum, no inventory number. Seen by C. Dobias-Lalou on September 12th, 1993 in Shahat: Cyrene Museum.

Commentary

The round hollow on top, normally, is not a good clue for a funerary use; neither is the shape of the stone without mouldings, although Beschi mentions it amongst his first group of funerary bases. However, Oliverio mentioned as provenance the 'South-Eastern Necropolis' (which is in fact the Eastern one). The question should remain open.
