Source description

Support: White marble base, reddish from earth, with plain mouldings on all four sides; lower moulding badly chipped off in the middle (w: 0.53 × h: 0.31 × d: 0.41).

Layout: Inscribed in two lines on the face between the mouldings (w: 0.475 × h: 0.155 × d: 0.355).

Letters: 0.02; carefully cut letters.

Date: Third century BC (lettering).

Findspot: Found at an unknown date at Cyrene: Necropolis, probably North Necropolis (Thorn).

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Seen by C. Dobias-Lalou in 2001 at Cyrene: along the modern entrance to the Sanctuary of Apollo.

Commentary

Although Μένανδρος is a more common form for this name, Μενέανδρος is very clear on the stone and should not be corrected, being consistent with the etymology.

The Thorns' attribution to the North Necropolis is based upon the fact that the Italian archaeologists worked only on that part before World War II.
