Source description

Support: Rock-cut niche containing a single altar (dimensions not registered).

Layout: Inscribed at three places: a) on rear wall, above the altar; b) on the rock at the right side of the niche; c) on the rock below the niche, under the altar; a) is partly hidden by a bush.

Letters: Dimensions of letters not registered; for eta, see commentary.

Date: Perhaps first half of fourth century BC (lettering).

Findspot: Found before 1923 at Cyrene: Ain Hofra.

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Seen by C. Dobias-Lalou in 1982 in situ at Ain Hofra.

Commentary

Ferri in his drawing gives a 'closed' eta. C. Dobias-Lalou is sceptical about that shape.

This is one among the series of altars dedicated to the Eumenides at Ain Hofra and also at other places outside the city walls of Cyrene.
