Commentary
The findspot was reported by Mohamed – Reynolds 1997, p. 38 n. 13 as follows: «beside a tomb on the old Cyrene-Balagrae (Shahat-Beida) road, about 1 km west of the extra-mural sanctuary of Demeter, still carrying a three-quarter figure of a mourning woman» (also repeated by the Thorns: Thorn – Thorn 2009, p. 266). It must be remembered that at the time the only known part of the extra-mural sanctuary was the area excavated by the American mission (so-called Enclosed sanctuary of Demeter and Kore), which is the Western part of the Southern Extra-Mural Sacred Zone as known since 2000. '1 km west' of it would be in the West Necropolis. So 'west' should be a mistake for 'east' and, as the Necropolis does not begin in correspondance with the sanctuary, the findspot should be sought more to the south, beside the road.
