Source description

Support: Rectangular base of reddish marble with a rectangular hollow (d: 0.03) on top (w: 0.41 × h: 0.25 × d: 0.40).

Layout: Inscribed on the face.

Letters: 0.02; careful letters symmetrically spaced.

Date: End of fourth or beginning of third century BC (lettering).

Findspot: Found by G. Guidi in 1926 at Cyrene: North Necropolis, from the enclosure of tomb N 1Cassels.

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Seen by Pugliese Carratelli in 1960 in Shahat: Cyrene Museum. Seen by J.M. Reynolds before 1997 at the same place. Not seen by IGCyr team.

Commentary

The date based on the lettering is not contradictory with some of the funerary material found inside the underground chamber of the rectangular tomb which anteceded the prestigious tomb N 1 (so-called Windmill Tomb) and might belong to that first stage. Ensoli 2022 insisting on that point, dissociates the inscribed base and circular tomb which, in her view, was that of a wealthy person, namely king Magas.
