Support: Fragment of a marble block, probably its upper right angle (w: 0.055 × h: 0.145 × d: 0.14).

Layout: Inscribed on front face.

Letters: 0.025.

Date: Admittedly Hellenistic

Findspot: Found before 1935 by G. Oliverio at Cyrene: Sanctuary of Apollo, near the Strategeion.

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Not found by Pugliese Carratelli in 1960. Not seen by IGCyr team.

Bakal fils de [---]énès (scil. a consacré ce monument), pendant sa prêtrise.

English translation

Bakal son of [---]enes (scil. dedicated this monument) while being priest.

Italian translation

Bakal figlio di [---]enes (scil. ha dedicato questo monumento) quando era sacerdote.

Commentary

The stone was published by Pugliese in SECir, 124 from a drawing in Oliverio's papers and has never been seen by anyone else.

The father's name might be a compound in -γένης, in -μένης or in -σθένης. Βακαλ is a name typical of Cyrenaica and rather rare, but no example is known in relation with the possible forms mentioned above.

Rosamilia 2023 offers about this inscription wholly hypothetical dating and prosopographical inferences, which we cannot endorse.
