Source description

Support: Four fragments, pieced together, of the foot and bottom of an Attic black-glazed ware grooved bolsal (h: 0.016; diameter 0.085).

Layout: Scratched under the foot on two different alignments.

Letters: 0.013-0.03; letters of different sizes.

Date: 380-350 BC (context, lettering).

Findspot: Found in 1963 at Cyrene: agora, outside the Northern rim of the North-West corner.

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Cyrene Museum, Storeroom of the Italian missions, A63 D1 46. Observed by R. Leone between 1997 and 2005 in Shahat: Storeroom of the Italian missions. Not seen by IGCyr team.

Commentary

From the photograph, the first letter on the left is sigma; the smaller letter is either, if read without moving the vase, a mu with the left leg lost or, if read after a quarter turn to the right, a sigma with the lower stroke lost. Anyway, the latter in C. Dobias-Lalou's view cannot be a nu, for the shape would refer to a date much higher than the vase and to a right-to-left script, also out of date.
