Source description

Support: Large fragment, probably from a stele of white marble, broken off at left and right and chipped off at upper edge; also probably re-cut at bottom (w: 0.34 × h: 0.52 × d: 0.23).

Layout: Inscribed in two lines at 0.25 from the upper edge; space between letters adapted to the number of letters at each line.

Letters: 0.03 to 0.035, deeply and carefully cut with light serifs; alpha with low bar, nu still slightly dissymmetrical.

Date: Probably first half of third century BC (lettering).

Findspot: Probably found before World War II at Cyrene: exact findspot unrecorded.

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Cyrene Museum, 18. Seen in 1979 by C. Dobias-Lalou in Shahat: Cyrene Museum.

Commentary

The low inventory number corresponds to the items found before World War II, moved to Tripolitania during the war and rearranged after 1953 when Goodchild was controller at Cyrene.

Both names are already attested in Cyrenaica. Karnis is especially Cyrenaican (see Robert 1967).
