Source description

Support: Small fragment of a white marble block, broken on all sides except below; it is not clear whether the present back face, which is not well smoothened, was the original back or is the result of a break (w: 0.10 × h: 0.10 × d: 0.05).

Layout: Inscribed on the face, of which only a narrow part (w: 0.05) is preserved.

Letters: l. 2: 0.02, l. 3: 0.023, lightly cut, with very small serifs.

Date: Perhaps third century BC (lettering).

Findspot: Probably found before World War II at Cyrene: exact findspot unknown.

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Cyrene Museum, 113. Seen by C. Dobias-Lalou n 1979 in Shahat: Cyrene Museum.

Commentary

The lettering at line 3, which is the last one on the stone, seems to be slightly larger than at the preceding lines. In the concluding formula, the two preserved letters form a plausible segment either of the name of the Cyrenaeans (Κυραναῖοι) or of the verb of dedication (ἀνέθηκαν). This is the only clue to the type of text that stood on this so fragmentary stone.
