Dedication to the Eumenides

Source description

Support: A rock-cut altar with probably two compartments (dimensions unknown).

Layout: Inscribed on the rear wall of the niche, in correspondence with the left compartment if it exists.

Letters: Height not registered, deeply cut; the right part of upsilon is worn out, but the right part has a clear serif on top.

Date: Perhaps end of fourth or first half of third century BC (context, lettering).

Findspot: Found in 2012 by the Mission of Urbino at Cyrene: in the lower part of the Wadi el Aish.

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: First studied in 2012 by E. Rosamilia in situ in the Wadi el Aish.

Commentary

Due to the conditions of quick survey it was not possible for E. Rosamilia to clean the altar and check the predictable two compartments. However the placement of the abbreviated name of the Eumenides helps to suppose that there were two of them.
