Source description

Support: Lower left angle of a white marble block broken off above, at right and back (preserved dimensions w: 0.255 × h: 0.11 × d: 0.18).

Layout: Inscribed twice: a) Inscribed on the face in a largely lost area; b) in two lines not well aligned and placed just under a), nearly touching it.

Letters: a) one slanting sigma surviving (0.03); b) not deeply cut letters (average 0.001) without serifs; slanting mu and sigma.

Date: Perhaps third century BC (lettering).

Findspot: Plausibly found before World War II at Cyrene: exact findspot not registered.

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Cyrene Museum, 417. Seen in 1977 by Dobias-Lalou in Shahat: Cyrene Museum.

Commentary

The only letter surviving from text a) is taken as a vestige of the previous text, while text b), because of its not very regular cutting and display, seems to be an appended graffito. However, this distribution is not quite sure.

At line 1 of text b) a possible restoration would be ἱαριτεύοντος in the formula of datation 'So and so being priest'. Other restorations might also be proposed. The names at line 2 are both rare, but attested once each in the third century BC in Cyrene: Pelagon at IGCyr1164002, Selymaios at IGCyr0082002.
