Source description

Support: Fragmentary white marble panel, re-cut at left, broken off on all other sides but for a very small part of the right edge (dimensions unknown).

Layout: Inscribed on the face.

Letters: Height unknown: careful letters with serifs.

Date: End of second or beginning of first century BC (lettering).

Findspot: Found in 1926 at Cyrene: Sanctuary of Apollo in front of the Doric Fountain, under a water-pipe.

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Not seen by IGCyr team.

(scil. Cette statue de) [c. 5]lès fils de Polyklès a été consacrée à Apollon et Artémis par [c. 5]kleia fille de Poseidis.

English translation

(scil. This statue of) [c. 5]kles son of Polykles was dedicated to Apollo and Artemis by [c. 5]kleia daughter of Poseidis.

Italian translation

(scil. Questa statua di) [c. 5]les figlio di Polykles fu dedicata ad Apollo e Artemide da [c. 5]kleia figlia di Poseidis.

Commentary

Oliverio's restorations of three names were not convincing, as already seen by Marengo. At l. 1, the honorandus' name may be a compound of -κλῆς or -θάλης as well; we leave the question open.

At l. 2, there are a lot of possiblities for the name ending with -κλεια of the woman responsible for the dedication.

For her father's name the restoration should be as short as possible, owing to the space available. So Πόσειδις, already attested at Cyrene, seems to be the best solution.
