Commentary

The base was re-used and the artist's signature related to the first use was not erased. However, as it stood at the rear of the base and as its letters were upside down, it should not be mentioned as a part of the present monument.

This inscription and IGCyr0159002, both in very good condition, have allowed to restore another dedication by Stolos erected in the port of Cyrene (IGCyr1025002).

On Stolos, the Athenian admiral, see Bagnall 1972, who proposed for the Cyrenaean dedications a date between 108 and 103 BC; Hauben 1977, who explored the possibility that he was a born a Cyrenaean and granted Athenian citizenship. On behalf of his aulic title and office Mooren 1977, pp. 186-188 dated this inscription to 108 BC, somewhat earlier in the year than IGCyr0159002, where he is also 'in charge of the reins'.

The findspot and date of discovery are known from a recently published report of excavations (see Luni 2014, p. 153). Quite normally, honours for the king were exposed on the agora.
