Source description

Support: White marble stele standing on a rectangular base, now restored; the stele, recomposed from eight fragments, six of which adjacent, is broken off at right edge on the whole height; a large fragment of its lower right part is lost; the base is complete, but for the lower left angle; the right rim of the stele in its upper part was more complete in 1866 (stele w: 0.685 × h: 1.785 × d: 0.32; base w: 1.015 × h: 0.31 × d: 0.45).

Layout: Inscribed successively a) on front side of the stele, b) on front side of the base in two columns, c) on left side of the base, d) on right side of the base.

Letters: Parts a and b 0.015; c and d 0.015-0.02; very regularly cut on a and b, more inaccurate on c and d, perhaps because those sides were inscribed when the whole monument was already erected.

Date: Ca. 345 BC (Laronde); between 340 and 335 BC (Rosamilia) (prosopography).

Findspot: Found at Cyrene: Temple of Zeus; the two main fragments of the stele (lines 1-58) were found in 1861 by Smith and Porcher; some fragments of the lower part of the stele in 1951 by Pesce; the base in the early 1970s by Stucchi, who recomposed the monument before 1976.

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Cyrene Museum, 140, 245 and 173. Seen by C. Dobias-Lalou in 1976 and again in 2001 in Shahat: Cyrene Museum. Seen by E. Rosamilia in 2012 at the same place.

Text constituted from: Transcription from stone (CDL).

Commentary

This is the most complete list of military officers found up to now. It was once exposed in the sanctuary of Zeus. The eventful history of its publication is reflected in the bibliography above. Some parts were known since the nineteenth century and others were found in Italian excavations before and after World War II. Stucchi reconstituted the monument, which was already exposed in the Cyrene Museum in the seventies of the twentieth century. The thorough publication was made by M.L. Lazzarini (Lazzarini 1996) with full commentary. She confirmed the date previously proposed by Laronde on behalf of prosopography (Laronde 1987) and Rosamilia pushes it slightly later.

Like IGCyr0148002 and IGCyr0151002, this list includes the titles of the officers, namely lochagos 'commander of a batallion'. Some batallions are homogeneous: 'four-horses chariots', 'riders', 'infantry', 'light infantry' (peltastai, i.e. infantrymen armed with the small shield named pelte), 'javelin-throwers', paraibatai (infantry-men carried one by one on a chariot and walking down for fighting). There are also commanders of triakatioi, a word which originally referred to the '300' forming the elite-guard (a Spartan institution); at Cyrene, from the end of the second century BC onwards, this word referred to the ephebs (see IGCyr0152002 and others); Cordiano 2001 argued that in the fourth century they still formed an elite-guard and that the change is related to the Ptolemaic organisation of the ephebic system. In fact the ephebs did probably not yet act as full warriors during their educational time. However, it should be stressed that the triakatioi did not belong to a 'batallion' similar to the others, as their head is simply called 'chief' (-αρχας).

There are furthermore some commanders of mixed batallions, mentioned as summeritai with the phrase 'commanders of batallions of (genitive) sharing with (dative)'.

The irregular script of side c and d shows that those entries were added when the monument was already erected. This fact explains why some commanders of batallions of paraibatai, probably omitted from the entry at l. 99, are mentioned again (with a slight variation of formulation) at l. 117.

For l. 37: a man named Χαιρεσίλας Αἰγλάνορος is known from a funerary stele (IGCyr1023002) and this helps to read the unclear segment.

For l. 73: where Lazzarini read ΗΣΒ, for which there seems to exist no restoration in the stock of personal names, Dobias-Lalou read ησε̣ (only the left half of the letter is preserved) so that a name in Κλησ(ι)- or, better for the space available, Ἁγησ(ι)- would be possible. See Ἁγήσερμος at Mytilene (IG, XII 2.327).

For l. 74 ΘΑΥΜ, read from the stone, might be completed by Θαυμασίας, Θαυμάσιος, Θαύμαστος, none of which is attested up to now in Cyrenaica.

At l. 124, instead of the unknown name *Γιλων (Lazzarini), we prefer Γιλδων, a Libyan name for which see Masson 1976, p. 56.
