Dedication of a statue or epitaph

EpiDoc XML: IGCyr1055102
Trismegistos ID: 738580

Source description

Support: Left part of a white marble rectangular base, better smoothened on upper face than on front face, broken off at right; on the upper face, the back is broken off along a deep dowel hole near the fore right angle, a feature that might be due to a later re-use (w: 0.175 × h: 0.27 × d: 0.105).

Layout: Inscribed twice: a) on front face in two lines, b) on upper face near the fore edge in one line.

Letters: 0.037 in both mentions, the letters of a) being better preserved and probably more deeply cut; serifs, symmetrical nu, middle-size omicron with the compass dot still visible in b).

Date: Second half of second century BC (lettering).

Findspot: Found before 1960 at Cyrene: exact findspot unrecorded.

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Cyrene Museum, 256. Seen by D. Morelli in 1960 in Shahat: Cyrene Museum. Seen in 1976 by C. Dobias-Lalou at the same place.

Text constituted from: Transcription from stone (CDL).

Commentary

It is difficult to decide whether the inscription on the upper face was inscribed earlier than the one on the front face, which is more monumental and also better preserved. However there should have been, if ever, a very short span of time between them.

The layout of b) makes plausible that only name and father's name stood on the front face. If so, there was no room on the upper face for the father's name to be mentioned.
