Source description

Support: Foot of an Attic black-glazed ware cup (cup type C) (h: 0.04 × d: 0.003; diameter 0.085).

Layout: Scratched under the foot, to be read from the center.

Letters: 0.009-0.013.

Date: Early fifth century BC (lettering, context).

Findspot: Found in 1993 by A. Santucci in Cyrene: agora, Sanctuary of the Anax.

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Cyrene Museum, Storeroom of the Italian missions, A93 CA2 25. Observed by R. Leone between 1997 and 2005 in Shahat: Storeroom of the Italian missions. Not seen by IGCyr team.

Commentary

This sherd was found along with those bearing IGCyr0884002 and IGCyr0885002 (personal communication by A. Santucci).

The letters can be interpreted as the beginning of many personal names, such as Τιμαγόρας, Τίμαρχος, Τιμῶναξ.

Another possibility of expansion for those three letters would be the word τιμά, usual in price inscriptions; however Marengo excludes that because no numeral follows.
