Source description

Support: Small fragment of a white marble console, broken off at left and back and also much damaged above (w: 0.09 × h: 0.11 × d: 0.055).

Layout: Inscribed on the flat face (w: 0.075 × h: 0.035); it is not clear whether more than 3 lines were inscribed.

Letters: Ll. 1-2 0.015; l. 3 0.017; no real serifs; not quite symmetrical nu, slanting sigma.

Date: Probably second half of fourth century BC (lettering).

Findspot: Found before 1977 at Cyrene: exact findspot unrecorded.

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Cyrene Museum, 488. Seen by C. Dobias-Lalou in 1977 in Shahat: Cyrene Museum.

Commentary

Line 3, written in smaller characters, probably brought information of a lesser status than the preceding lines. The ending might belong to a verb at the imperfect, but none can be chosen because of the lack of parallels. They are not fitting any known formula of artist's signature. Those vestiges are too poor to allow any hypothesis.
