Commentary

In spite of the fragmentary condition of this inscription, it is clear that it contained a list of names. As shown by the omega at line 1 and by the correspondance with second parts of compound names such as -τέλης at line 5, we may conclude that we have only part of the fathers' names. All names were carefully cut by the same hand. The lettering seems too old for a list of ephebes, the oldest one being IGCyr015200² at the beginning of the second century BC. It looks rather like the lists of military officers, which, however, are rather older. Other lists of names of unknown purpose, such as IGCyr009100² or IGCyr131500², are nearer in matter of lettering, although none may be brought together with this fragment.

The segment preserved at line 1 might be the end of a compound name in -στρατος or belong to the name Στράτων. At line 3, on the broken edge at left, a very small stroke above might belong to a sigma or a tau. This would lead, amongst the names that are common at Cyrene, either to Λύσιππος or to Ἀρίστιππος. Anyway, as none of the partial names preserved here is a rare one, no prosopographical identification is possible.
