Source description

Support: Fragmentary white marble panel with the sides smoothen on a depth of 0.01, broken off at top and below (w: 0.20 × h: 0.145 × d: 0.055).

Layout: Inscribed on the face, each line centred along vertical axis.

Letters: 0.09; slight serifs, smaller circular letters, non-slanting sigma.

Date: Second century BC (lettering).

Findspot: Found before 1960 at Cyrene ➚: exact findspot unrecorded.

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Cyrene Museum, 549. Seen by C. Dobias-Lalou in 1977 in Shahat: Cyrene Museum.

At line 9, Marengo's interesting restoration is ruled out through autopsy of the stone. We should thus suppose with Luni that in this instance two gymnasiarchs of the elders were on duty. The list of ephebes, with the title τριακάτιοι, would have begun just under the break. See also Rosamilia 2023, who suggests without arguing that this list might be one of the oldest. Besides, he points out that the first mentioned of the gymnasiarchs for seniors might be [Philis]kos son of Philoxenos, homonym of a priest of an unknown deity and belonging to a well-known family.
