Commentary
This base was copied by L. Pernier in his notebook on his arrival at Cyrene on July 29th, 1929 for the summer campaign of 1929. He described it amongst the area excavated by the Superintendancy since March of the same year. Since that date, it has not been moved. Although recut for a re-use, the inscription was probably not moved very far and should have stood in the Sanctuary by its first use.
Kleon is no rare name at Cyrene, whereas Pollidas is only known for three persons. The lettering allows to identify the present Kleon son of Pollidas with the homonymous damiergos on duty in IGCyr0115002. Moreover, Pollidas son of Kleon in a probable list of military officers (IGCyr1035002) would be his father. Furthermore, Phylochos son of Pollidas in the great list of military officers dated about 345 BC (IGCyr0840002, line 77) is almost certainly a brother of our Kleon.
