Source description

Support: Fragment of the rim of an Attic black-glazed ware vase, perhaps a band cup. (w: 0,023 × h: 0,027 × d: 0,003).

Layout: Graffito on the outside of the fragment.

Letters: 0,008, either crossed-theta of phi with large loop and non-projecting vertical stroke.

Date: Between 550 and 525 BC (lettering, context).

Findspot: Found in 1977 at Cyrene: agora.

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Cyrene Museum, Storeroom of the Italian missions, A77 C2 514. Observed by R. Leone between 1997 and 2005 in Shahat: Storeroom of the Italian missions. Not seen by IGCyr team.

Commentary

It is impossible to decide between both letters; that shape of theta is attested in a series of archaic inscriptions such as IGCyr0001002 and IGCyr0007002, while a similar phi can be found in IGCyr0004102 and IGCyr0008002.
