Source description

Support: White marble rectangular base with holes for attachment of a statue: one circular hole for a raised foot at back left, one oval hole for a resting foot at front right (w: 0.495 × h: 0.15 × d: 0.64).

Layout: Inscribed in one line on the face, near the upper rim.

Letters: 0.035, carefully cut, no serifs; slightly smaller omicron, slanting sigma.

Date: Probably last quarter of fourth or first quarter of third century BC (lettering).

Findspot: Possibly found during the Italian excavations before World War II at Cyrene: Sanctuary of Apollo.

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Seen by C. Dobias-Lalou in 1977 and again in 2001 placed on a wall in the area of the Temple of Asklepios.

Commentary

Although both names are frequently used in Cyrene, the lettering allows to suggest that this man might be the father of one Aristis son of Lysis, a contributor mentioned at IGCyr0652102, ii.105.
