Source description

Support: Rectangular white marble base with three holes on upper side, vestiges of a bronze statue (w: 0.061 × h: 0.21 × d: 0.46).

Layout: Inscribed on front face.

Letters: 0.03; careful and regular letters covering the whole surface.

Date: Last third of the fourth century BC (prosopography).

Findspot: First seen by P. Negri in 1827 at Cyrene: in the Sanctuary of Apollo, Temple of Apollo.

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Cyrene Museum, no inv. number. Copied by J. Vattier de Bourville in 1848 at the same place. Copied by R.M. Smith and E.A. Porcher in 1861 at the same place. Seen by C. Dobias-Lalou on September 1st, 2001 in Shahat: Cyrene Museum. Seen by E. Rosamilia in 2010 at the same place.

Polianthès, fils d'Anaxis a consacré comme dîme à Apollon (scil. la statue) de son père Anaxis fils de Zeuximakhos.

English translation

Polianthes, son of Anaxis dedicated as a tithe to Apollo (scil. the statue) of his father Anaxis son of Zeuximachos.

Italian translation

Commentary

Franz for CIG, vol. III used Negri's copy and mentioned only in the addenda of CIG, vol. 4 Letronne's reading from Vattier de Bourville's copy. A small part of the initial pi at line 1 still survives and may have been complete when Smith and Porcher saw it. The stone in 2001 was placed beneath another projecting one, thus the bad quality of our photograph, which is however the first one to be published.
