Source description

Support: Three adjacent fragments of a grey marble stele, broken off below and at back, crowned by a large cornice with a small plain moulding on top (altogether w: 0.305 × h: 0.475- × d: 0.15-; without cornice w: 0.23 × h: 0.295-).

Layout: Inscribed on the whole front side.

Letters: 0.01 at ll. 1-15, 0.08 l. 16 on.

Date: Beginning of the second century BC (lettering).

Findspot: Fragment a found by Oliverio in 1928 at Cyrene: Sanctuary of Apollo, North-West of the Roman Propylaeum; other fragments: provenance unknown.

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Cyrene Museum, 514 (Oliverio's fragment) and 1827 (additional fragments). All fragments seen by C. Dobias-Lalou in 1979 in Shahat: Cyrene Museum.

Commentary

The triakatioi are at Cyrene soldiers in formation, i.e. ephebes. For the vocabulary of the officers, see Dobias-Lalou 2000.

At l. 3, the missing nu in the name Anaxandros (and probably also the hypercorrect final nu in the genitive of Menandros at l. 5) give a clue for an early slackening of the implosive nasal and a concomitant nasalization of the preceding vowel, a phenomenon for which see Dobias-Lalou 2000, p. 66.
