Source description

Support: Light grey marble, plain base with two holes for feet of statue on upper side; apart from a neat mark of saw passing through the letters of line 9, the inscribed face is still complete, but for the right lower angle (w: 0.625 × h: 0.36 × d: 0.50).

Layout: Inscribed on the face with reduced margins, so that nearly the entire surface is covered by the inscription.

Letters: 0.015; careful lettering with light serifs; alpha with broken central bar.

Date: 185-180 BC (prosopography).

Findspot: Found at Cyrene: fallen down in the wadi below the terrace of the Sanctuary of Apollo.

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Seen by C. Dobias-Lalou in 2010 in Shahat: Terrace of the Department of Antiquities.

(scil. La statue de) Philon fils de Kastor, archisomatophylax du roi et stratège a été consacrée à Apollon par les Cyrénéens en raison de la valeur et du dévouement qu'il a montrés envers le roi Ptolémée, la reine Cléopatre, Dieux Epiphanes, et leurs enfants, ainsi qu'envers la cité de Cyrène.

English translation

(scil. The statue of) Philon son of Castor, archisomatophylax of the king and general was dedicated to Apollo by the Cyrenaeans on behalf of his virtue and well-doing towards king Ptolemy, queen Cleopatra, Gods Epiphaneis and their children, as well as towards the city of Cyrene.

(scil. La statua di) Philon figlio di Kastor, archisomatophylax del re e stratego è stata consacrata ad Apollo dai Cirenei in considerazione del valore e della dedizione che ha mostrato nei confronti del re Tolemeo e della regina Cleopatra, Dèi Epifani, e dei loro figli, come pure nei confronti della città di Cirene.
