Source description

Support: Left end of the white Parian marble architrave of a door, with sculptured cymatium (w: 0.91 × h: 0.114; reconstructed width 2.28).

Layout: Inscribed under the Aeolic frieze.

Letters: Height unknown; very small omicron, slanting nu.

Date: Fourth century BC (context, lettering).

Findspot: Found in 1917 at Cyrene: Sanctuary of Apollo, Temple of Artemis (2nd phase).

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Seen by C. Dobias-Lalou many times between 1976 and 2010, replaced in the Temple of Artemis.

Commentary

About ὀπά see Robert 1955 and especially at Cyrene Rosamilia 2023.

We have here the word and its support restituted in its original function: the architrave of the door leading from the pronaos to the cella of the 2nd-phase Artemision.
