Source description

Support: White marble small base with double mouldings, probably plain, but severely chipped on all sides (w: 0.34 × h: 0.135 × d: 0.18); square hole in the centre of the upper side.

Layout: Inscribed on the face

Letters: 0.014-0.018; slight serifs, short delta, alpha with dropped bar, pi with rather long right stroke.

Date: Ca. 100 BC (lettering).

Findspot: Found at an unknown date at Cyrene: Necropolis, probably North Necropolis (Thorn).

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Cyrene Museum, 249. Seen by C. Dobias-Lalou in 1976 in Shahat: Cyrene Museum.

Commentary

As the deceased is a foreigner, it is not surprising that his name is spelled in a non-dialectal form.

The Thorn's assumption that the base comes from the North Necropolis is due to the fact that the Italian archaeologists seem to have excavated only in that part before World War II.
