Source description

Support: White marble base with a hole on top; for a later use the base has been recut and the former inscribed side has two footprints for another statue (w: 0.58- × h: 0.33 × d: 0.78).

Layout: Inscribed on the face.

Letters: 0.033.

Date: Second half of second century BC (titulature).

Findspot: Found before 1915 in Ptolemais: South of the Fortress of the Dux, in which it had probably been re-used.

Place of origin: Ptolemais.

Last recorded location: Tulmeita Museum, inv. number unknown. Seen by C. Dobias-Lalou in 1976 in Ţulmaythah, in front of the Tolmeita Museum.

Commentary

The dimensions of the lost part may be inferred from l. 3, where Λιβύην seems probably better than Κυρήνην (see discussion by Laronde 1987, pp. 418-419) and was later on confirmed through IGCyr0809002.

At l. 2, the article would provide too long a restoration, whereas at l. 4 πρώτων φίλων, a title that would seem a good suggestion, is undoubtedly too long.

For the date, on basis of the lettering, Ghislanzoni proposed the end of the second or beginning of the first century BC. Moretti thought that it was rather the first half of the second BC. Eventually, the discussion of the aulic titles led Laronde to the second half of that century.
