Source description

Support: White marble base, chipped in the middle of the upper edge, with holes for two feet on the upper face (w: 0.64 × h: 0.2 × d: 0.69); the surface of the front face is damaged and covered with concretions.

Layout: Inscribed twice with the same text on front face, this one in two lines just under upper edge; on the same stone as IGCyr0956102, which is a duplicate.

Letters: 0.018; large spaces between letters, slanting mu and sigma, unequal strokes of nu, rather open omega.

Date: First quarter of fourth century BC (lettering).

Findspot: Found in 1925 at Cyrene: Sanctuary of Apollo.

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Seen in 1960 by Pugliese Carratelli at the same place. Seen by C. Dobias-Lalou in 2001 at Cyrene: Sanctuary of Apollo, namely West of the Temple of Artemis.

Nikandros fils d'Artymiôn (scil. a consacré ce monument) comme dîme.

English translation

Nikandros son of Artymion (scil. dedicated this monument) as a tithe.

Italian translation

Nikandros figlio di Artymion (scil. ha dedicato questo monumento) come decima.

Commentary

The restoration of the name is based on the second inscription (IGCyr0956102), which is more visible than the first one. Oliverio clearly supplied a supplementary character, the tripunct belonging to the more ancient epigraphic habit. Given the space lost and the dimension of the letters, this is a plausible restoration.
