Dedication of the Strategeion

Source description

Support: Limestone treasury now fully reconstructed, the facade of which has a Doric frieze with eight metopes (each w: 0.472 × h: 0.61 × d: 0.63) above the architrave made of five adjacent blocks (each w: 1.56 × h: 0.50 × d: 8.7).

Layout: Inscribed a) on metopes ii to vii (vi and vii with text lost); b) on the architrave.

Letters: a) 0.04-0.06; b)0.09-0.10.

Date: Between 340 and 330 BC (prosopography).

Findspot: The first fragments were found in 1928, the others in 1929 at Cyrene: Sanctuary of Apollo, in the excavations of the Strategeion.

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Studied by C. Dobias-Lalou in 1983 in situ, replaced the restored Strategeion. Also studied by E. Rosamilia in 2012 on the restored monument in situ.

Les stratèges Aristophanès fils de Paraibatas, Aristis fils de Bakal, Autobios fils d'Haniokhos,[Untel fils d'Untel] et [Untel fils d'Untel] ont consacré (scil. ce momument) à Apollon comme dîme prélevée sur les ennemis.

English translation

The strategoi Aristophanes son of Paraibatas, Aristis son of Bakal, Autobios son of Haniochos,[So-and-so son of So-and-so] and [So-and-so son of So-and-so] dedicated (scil. this momument) to Apollo as a tithe taken from the ennemies.

Italian translation

Gli strateghi Aristophanes figlio di Paraibatas, Aristis figlio di Bakal, Autobios figlio di Haniochos,[il tale figlio del tale] e [il tale figlio del tale] hanno dedicato (scil. questo momumento) ad Apollo come decima presa dai nemici.

Commentary

The above text reflects the modern restoration made in 1930-32 by Gismondi, with one metope not inscribed at each end of the frieze. If the other six ones were really inscribed, we must infer that two names are missing. This has never been mentioned by the previous commentators. Pugliese Carratelli, with help of photographs and copies found in Oliverio's papers, was able to join the parts inscribed viz. on the architrave and on the metopes and published separately by Oliverio. However Pugliese does not seem to have realised that they belonged to the Strategeion, which he could see already reconstructed with the two parts in the reverse order.
