List of men, perhaps heads of an association

Source description

Support: Limestone stele with a horizontal channel cut through the front face at about 0.35 from the top before it was inscribed; later recut at right and back for re-use (w: 0.39 × h: 2.175 × d: 0.32). A hole near the left edge anteceded the inscription, so that lines 42-44 begin at some distance from the left rim.

Layout: Inscribed on front face and left-hand side (perhaps also on the right lost side); traces of guidelines; many different entries, of which height and description of the hands are estimated under Dobias-Lalou's responsability from editor's photograph.

Letters: Hand 1: height unknown. Hand 2: 0.035-0.038, alpha with dropped bar, classical pi, moderately slanting sigma. Hand 3: 0.025, alpha with dropped bar, dotted theta, pi with projecting upper bar, non-slanting sigma. Hand 4: 0.038, alpha with straight bar, smaller omicron, rho with very small loop, slanting sigma. Hand 5: 0.022 (ll. 11-12); 0.016 (ll. 13-14), slight serifs, alpha with broken bar, non-slanting sigma, calice-shaped upsilon. Hand 6: 0.019, slight serifs, pi with projecting upper bar, non-slanting sigma, calice-shaped upsilon. Hand 7: 0.00.019-0.028 (phi, psi), broad nu, phi with small and flat loop, psi with tall vertical and short oblique strokes. Hand 8: 0.019, serifs, smaller delta and circular letters. Hand 9: 0.019, serifs, rho with large loop. Hand 10: 0.017, slight serifs of non-slanting sigma, horseshoe omega. Hand 11: 0.019, slight serifs, non-slanting sigma, xi without central vertical stroke. Hand 12: 0.022, serifs, dropped bar alpha, tall beta, rho with samll loop. Hand 13: 0.019-0.023, marked serifs, alpha with dropped bar, phi with flattened loop low on the vertical stroke. Hand 14: 0.016, nearly no serifs. Hand 15: 0.019, deeply cut with serifs, broad letters. Hand 16: 0.022, deeply cut, serifs; narrow beta, calice-shaped upsilon, phi with very small oval loop. Hand 17: 0.025, serifs, rho with loop tending to be square, nice oval loop of phi. Hand 18: 0.018, nearly no serifs, beta with upper loop smaller than lower, broad non-slanting sigma. Hand 19: 0.025-0.031, serifs, pi with projecting upper bar, some sigmas slighlty slanting, phi with much flattened loop. Hand 20: 0.027-0.03, carelessly aligned letters, no serifs, but for omega. Hand 21: 0.022, nearly no serifs, broad sigma. Hand 22: 0.013, broad sigma. Hand 23: 0.024, perhaps no serifs, irregular sigmas. Hand 24: 0.025, too badly damaged to allow any description. Hand 25: 0.025, no marked serifs, rho with loop tending to be square, slightly slanting sigma. Hand 26: 0.024, no real serifs, mu with four oblique strokes nearly equal, not at all slanting sigma. Hand 27: 0.025, no serifs, rho with samll loop cut right-to-left, horse-shoe omega. Hand 28: 0.025, no serifs, rectangular epsilon, lunate omega. Hand 29: 0.025, no serifs, not allowing further description. Hand 30: 0.025, no serifs, carelessly cut, rho with small square loop. Hand 31: 0.019, see above.

Date: From mid third century to first quarter of first century BC (lettering).

Findspot: Found in 2005 by the Polish Mission during survey at Ptolemais: re-used in a wall, half way between the Theatre and the Tokra Gate.

Place of origin: Ptolemais.

Last recorded location: Observed by A. Łajtar in 2006 at Ţulmaythah: Tolmeita Museum, probably in the storeroom of the Polish mission. Not seen by IGCyr team.

Text constituted from: Editor's transcription.

Commentary

The wide chronological span, already estimated by Łajtar, is based on the succession of different hands. Moreover there seems to be a gap between the letterings of sides a and b, the latter offering a lunate omega at line 62 and also the ending -αις for -αιος at line 60, another hint of lateness.

While Łajtar counted the entries from line 3 on, whence 27 different items, we here count the hands, including one for lines 1 and 2, which in Łajtar's mind might be a title; besides, we tend to distinguish a few more hands than he did (a view that remains hypothetical because it relies only on photographs). Furthermore, one should mind that the numbering of lines continued from face a to face b may be arbitrary, because the right face was perhaps also inscribed, all the more so that generally speaking the script at side b shows a clear contrast with that of side a.

At line 41, Łajtar cautiously suggested as father's name Λυσανίας, who would be the grand-father of the homonym at line 48; however this restoration seems rather long, even with the dialectal ending Λυσανία, so that the shorter genitive Λύσιος would perhaps be more acceptable.

At lines 42-44, a hole at left probably anteceded the inscription; in the space left, there was perhaps enough space for a short father's name beginning with a delta at line 42, whereas lines 43 and 44 the space would be so small that perhaps only one name each without any patronymic was inscribed there.

Łajtar, after thourough discussion (Łajtar 2010, pp. 115-117) suggests that the catalogue lists the heads of an association, two or three men perhaps changed every two years.
