Support: A white marble stele, reddish from earth; its shape is plain and slightly slantering (dimensions w: 0.36 to 0.41 × h: 1.03 × d: 0.125 to 0.155).

Layout: Inscribed on one line at 0.13 from the upper edge.

Letters: Carefully cut (ca. 0.01) on the whole width; smaller circular letters, alpha with rather low bar, rho with a rather small loop, slanting sigma, widely open upper part of upsilon, horseshoe omega.

Date: Plausibly fourth century BC (lettering).

Findspot: Found in 2019 by Fadel Abdulaziz Alhase at Cyrene ➚: in the North Necropolis, near the range of tombs N97-101 Cassels.

Place of origin: Findspot.

Commentary

Theoros is the form known in several regions, corresponding to Θέαρος in the Cyrenaican dialect. It transposes the word θεαρός, θεωρός 'sacred envoy', sent to sanctuaries for consulting an oracle or attending games. The name and the word are both already attested in inscriptions from Cyrenaica in the dialectal form.

Eratonymos, new for Cyrenaica, belongs to a group of personal names including the word ὄνομα, 'name'. It corresponds to an adjective ἐρατώνυμος 'with lovely name'.
