Source description

Support: Slightly tapered white marble stele, chipped off below, with a rectangular hole on top (w: 0.39-0.43 × h: 1.49 × d: 0.255-0.29); back side reused as IRCyr2020 C.607.

Layout: Inscribed on front face at 0.38 from the bottom.

Letters: 0.02, regular letters.

Date: Third century BC (lettering).

Findspot: Copied by J.-R. Pacho in 1825 at Cyrene: North Necropolis.

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Seen by C. Dobias-Lalou on May 25th, 1982 in Shahat: deposited on the Terrace of the Department of Antiquities.

Commentary

Lüderitz (see Lüderitz – Reynolds 1983) rightly criticised Applebaum's view that this man was a Jew; this man might simply be broadly speaking of Semitic origin. Furthermore, Applebaum took this mention as an artist's signature of the inscription on the opposite side, which is a multiple epitaph with dates between 90 and 102 AD. Lüderitz was only able to add a note where he mentioned from information by J.M. Reynolds, that both sides should be taken separately.

Due to the current place of the stele this side is always in the shadow and cannot be easily photographed.
