Source description

Support: Plain white marble base with two holes for feet of statue on the upper side; the surface is covered by lichen (w: 0.725 × h: 0.335 × d: 0.65).

Layout: Inscribed on the face.

Letters: 0.035; careful letters.

Date: Fourth century BC (lettering).

Findspot: Found in 1927 at Cyrene: Sanctuary of Apollo, between the Temple of Athena and the East Staircase leading to the Fountain Terrace.

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Seen by C. Dobias-Lalou in 1983 at the same place, in the Sanctuary of Apollo.

Commentary

This base sustained a statue of the person named in the inscription. At the nominative case, the name is a caption, so that the monument is mainly honorific. However, being erected in the sanctuary of Apollo, it is at least placed under the protection of the god and might also be taken as some sort of a dedication to him.
