Source description

Support: White marble base with plain mouldings on top and below, which are slightly chipped off at the upper right and also on the upper face (dimensions from the photograph w: ca. 0.66 × h: ca. 0.26).

Layout: Inscribed in two lines on the face.

Letters: Approximately, from the photograph ca. 0.03; no serifs, smaller theta and omicron, slightly slanting sigma, chalice-shaped upsilon, horse-shoe shaped omega.

Date: Perhaps end of fourth or beginning of third century BC (lettering).

Findspot: Found before 2013 at Cyrene: unidentified Necropolis.

Place of origin: Findspot.

Last recorded location: Cyrene Museum, inv. number unknown. Seen and photographed by the Chieti Mission before 2013 in Shahat: in front of the Casa Parisi, which is part of the Cyrene Museum. Not seen by IGCyr team.

Commentary

The name Πρῶρος is only attested in Cyrenaica. The father's name is known mainly from Cyrene (also from Thera, yet in Roman times), mainly in the dialectal form Θευκρίσιος, but sometimes also in the more common form Θεοκρίσιος, for which we have but one occurrence in Attica.
