Source description

Support: White marble base with egg and dart mouldings at top and bottom on three sides (whole base w: 0.855 × h: 0.32 × d: 0.585).

Layout: Inscribed in two lines on front face between the mouldings (w: 0.74 × h: 0.155 × d: 0.48), in two lines carefully centred.

Letters: 0.045; very carefully cut; very small serifs; still slanting mu and sigma; the right part of pi is longer than usual.

Date: Probably first quarter of the third century BC (lettering, prosopography).

Findspot: Found before 1979 at Cyrene: probably from South Necropolis.

Place of origin: Cyrene.

Last recorded location: Seen by C. Dobias-Lalou in 1979 at Cyrene: inside archaeological enclosure North of Caesareum.

Commentary

This man might be the son of Kallippos son of Melanippos who is the first strategos on duty in 320 (see IGCyr0108002, l. 74). About that family, see Laronde 1987, pp. 102, 117.
