Commentary

All commentators have considered this stele as listing military officers, because of its obvious similarities with other lists mentioning some military duties (IGCyr0148002, IGCyr0149002, IGCyr0150002, IGCyr0840002). The most striking resemblance lies in the columnar disposal and lettering. It should however be stressed that lists of names may correspond to other purposes. Rosamilia 2023, p. 70 warns in turn on this point.

A date in the second half of fourth century was already suggested in IGCyr, contra Laronde 1987, p. 133 («IVe siècle sans plus de précision») and Fraser – Matthews 1987 («III BC», probably after Blass, whose argument about the name Σμυρναῖος did not seem binding). Rosamilia 2023 reduces this span of time to ca. 330/300 BC without clear explanation.

We restored the name of the first man mentioned at line 27 by comparison with IGCyr0952002, a dedication by a priest of Apollo of that name. The dedication, hence the priesthood, is now dated to the years 290 BC by Rosamilia 2023, p. 102. It seems not impossible that we have here to do with the same man, if he was enlisted rather young.

The name at line 14 was tentatively restored by Marengo on the basis of another tentative restoration at IGCyr0143002, line 6, which we eventually prefer not to push forward (Eukles would also be possible there).
