Commentary

Following Rosamilia 2023, this account was cut after the four others, on a side that was already damaged.

This account is far more accurate than the other ones. Only IGCyr0882002 gives a detailed list of the expenses. She-bear (ἄρκος) is the name of the priestess of Artemis, as it is also at Brauron in Attica.

After Dobias-Lalou's discussion of the division into clauses of lines 12 to 19 and her recognition of the god Iatros at line 17, a thorough study of the theatrical implications of this text was given by Ceccarelli – Milanezi 2007. At line 13, they prefer to read a nominative singular περιάκτριαι: whereas the etymology of this hapax legomenon is clear, its exact meaning is unknown. In their view, it is, like the rare περίακτος, a revolving machine allowing to change the scenery on the theatre. The translation would then be 'revolving machines for the scenery'. However, such a mention at the nominative in the list of expenses is somewhat surprising. Our translation reflects an alternative reading: the dative singular of a feminine agent name referring to a person who revolves for some ritual or celebration: this seems more adequate for the meaning of κόσμος 'ornament' and for the syntax of the text (see already , pp. 238-239. Neither option is absolutely sure.

At line 17 the phrase ποθ᾿ ἑσπέραν was formerly translated 'till the night' by Dobias-Lalou (at Dobias-Lalou 1993 and consequently in IGCyr). However, it seems now more appropriate to keep the local meaning of ἑσπέρα, 'place where the sun sets down, West', alluding to the sanctuary at Balagrai, which is situated in the western countryside of Cyrene.
